EMERGENCY LIGHTING SYSTEMS in Doha Qatar


From DIY solutions like candles and flashlights to corporate and commercial regulations like exit signs, emergency lights play an important role in ensuring that you and your family evacuate a space safely in the event of an emergency. They help occupants stay calm and control, protect people against panic and unnecessary accidents, and help to clearly mark exits and pathways to safety. They're part of generate building code and are mandated in public buildings. 

EMERGENCY LIGHTING is an umbrella word that covers a wide range of lighting solutions that aim to ease and alleviate panic while ensuring safe passage out of a building. Here are a few different types that you'll experience most commonly:

  • Open Area/Anti-panic lighting: This type of emergency lighting is meant to avoid panic in case of a power outage an people in the building to clearly recognise escape routes. The required illuminance level in the defined area is at least 0.5 lux. It helps people safely complete ongoing tasks, find their bearings, identify and avoid obstacles, identify their escape route, and reach the exit without panicking. This type of lighting is most often found in malls, museums, concert halls, exhibition spaces and other areas attract significant numbers of visitors who will not be familiar with the layout of the premises.
  • Escape route lighting: This type of lighting aims to enable people to swiftly and safely evacuate a building by illuminating specific escape routes like corridors and stairways while identifying the location of fire-fighting equipment at hand. It allows occupants to recognise and avoid obstacles in their path and safely use the escape routes out of the area. This two-fold system consists of pre-determined escape route lighting as well as illuminated safety signs that are mandatory in any building. Escape routes must be illuminated across a width of 2 meters and an illuminance level of at least 1lux along the center line for a path width of one metre must be guaranteed.
  • Illuminated safety signs: These are the most common and highly visible of all emergency lights. They're present in every mall, hospital, airport and building you go into and are represented by universal, unambiguous pictograms that depict a man running. They point to the nearest escape route and are built to be immediately recognisable and highly visible. They're often backlit as these type of signs can be more easily recognised at a greater distance than externally illuminated signs.
  • Task Lighting: This type of emergency lighting helps people see when they need to perform a safety procedure like breaking glass to access a shut-off switch, reading safety instructions, opening an emergency exit, or operating a fire extinguisher. By law, they're required to be no less than 10% of the normal required light level, and at least15 lux. They're primarily present at dangerous workstations where there are high temperatures, harmful vapours being released, moving equipment being stored or high-voltage used.
  • Secondary or backup lighting: In hospitals and businesses where power failures might not cause any serious harm but work needs to carry on, secondary lighting kicks in to do the job. For a limited period of time, it will assume the function of general lighting, and uses backup generators to help keep normal operations and emergency lighting working.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING can also be identified and divided based the two available types of power sources. A self-contained luminiare, contains all the essential components (i.e. battery, charger, control unit, lamp, diffuser and any test or monitoring facility) for it to function as an independent emergency light. This is the most common form of emergency lighting and is usually designed to be fitted to a wall or ceiling to illuminate a certain area or building feature. In contrast, centrally supplied luminaires are ones that can't function independently, and are instead powered by a central emergency power system that is not contained within the luminaire. These types of lights contain the lamp and some of the control gear but the charger, battery and often the changeover device are located remotely and provide the supply to a number of luminaires.

Finally, EMERGENCY LIGHTING can come in one of two modes of operation. In maintained emergency lighting solutions, emergency lighting lamps are on at all times. This is used most often in places of assembly such as theatres, cinemas, clubs and halls. The lights are typically dimmed when these premises are occupied and the emergency escape lighting prevents total darkness. In large, public spaces, maintained fire exit signs are also a norm. They offer clear escape route guidance in evacuations, even if the area is well-lit and its general lighting system doesn't fail. In non-maintained emergency lighting solutions, emergency lamps only come on when the power supply to the normal lighting fails. This mode is the preference for workspaces and other environments where there's a steady supply of artificial lighting so long as the premise is occupied.
