Plastic is one of the most ubiquitous materials known to man. Every year, more than 100 million tons of plastics are manufactured across the globe, and over 200 billion pounds of new plastic material is thermoformed, foamed, laminated and extruded into millions of packages and products. PLASTIC & PLASTIC PRODUCTS are everywhere. But what happens to the millions of goods that get thrown away each year? Packaging that's no longer needed? Old items that have worn out their purpose, broken in two or malformed over the years? You wouldn't be wrong for assuming that they're recycled. Plastic recycling is a thing, and while most countries in the world have the capability to refurbish old plastic, unfortunately, the vast majority of plastic is un-reusable.
There are six main types of plastic:
- PS (Polystyrene) β Example: foam hot drink cups, plastic cutlery, containers, and yogurt.
- PP (Polypropylene) β Example: lunch boxes, take-out food containers, ice cream containers.
- LDPE (Low-density polyethylene) β Example: garbage bins and bags.
- PVC (Plasticised Polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl chloride)βExample: cordial, juice or squeeze bottles.
- HDPE (High-density polyethylene) β Example: shampoo containers or milk bottles.
- PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) β Example: fruit juice and soft drink bottles.
Of these, only PET, HDPE, and PVC plastic products are recycled under curbside recycling programs. The other three types of plastic aren't typically recycled because they often get stuck in the sorting equipment in recycling facilities causing it to break or stop. Lids and bottle tops cannot be recycled, neither can plastic material with food residues on or in it. Other forms of plastic are deemed un-reusable simply because its not economically feasible to do so.
Recycling plastics helps the environment by reducing high rates of plastic pollution, putting less pressure on virgin materials to produce brand new plastic products, and repurposing scrap into functional and useful products. This not only helps to conserve resources, but also diverts plastics from landfills or unintended destinations such as oceans. It also helps to provide, a sustainable source of raw materials, consumes less energy, and encourages people to live a sustainable lifestyle.
When possible, plastic recycling consists of a few simple processes - collecting, sorting, shredding, washing, melting, and pelletizing or extruding. The actual steps may vary based on the plastic resin or type of plastic product, but the concept is the same. The processes can be bundled together into two simple steps. In step one, plastics are automatically or manually sorted to make sure all the contaminants are removed from the plastic waste stream. Next, the sorted plastic is melted down directly into a new shape or shredded into flakes before being cleaned, melted down, and processed into granulates.
Another form of recycling that's gaining traction in the United States, Australia and Japan is heat compression. This method has the ability to recycle all types of plastic at once, and doesn't require matching forms of plastic to be sorted separately, making it a popular choice in countries with a large number of plastic waste. In simple terms, the process takes unsorted and cleaned plastic waste and mixes it in huge tumblers that churn the entire mixture.
